Our benchmarks

The benchmarks behind your price.

Every price on the Index references a public market. Here’s exactly which one, and where to check it.

Rice

Platts Thailand 5% Broken FOB Bangkok

The export price for standard Thai rice loaded onto ships in Bangkok — the reference point most of the world’s rice trade is priced against.

Flour

ASX Eastern Australia Wheat (WM)

This tracks what Australian wheat — flour’s main ingredient — trades for on the ASX. When wheat moves, flour moves with it.

Oats

CME Oats (ZO)

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange futures price for oats — the same market millers and food companies use to price oats in bulk.

Olive Oil

International Olive Council reference price

A reference price published by the body that tracks olive oil production and trade across the Mediterranean, the world’s main olive oil growing region.

Why prices move even when nothing changed at the farm

Most of these benchmarks are set in US dollars. We convert them to Australian dollars every day, so when the AUD strengthens against the USD, the AUD price of rice (and our other imported staples) can fall — even if the underlying commodity price hasn’t moved at all. It’s one more reason a single advertised price doesn’t reflect what’s really happening in the market — and one more reason we’d rather show you the benchmark than hide behind it.
